Whether it’s called Fleur de Sel or Flor de Sal, it is still the flower of the sea. Flor de Sal, the Portuguese sea salt, is the thin, flat, and delicate crystal that literally melts in your mouth. This salt is also known as the ‘Cream’ of salts. Skimmed only from the top ½-inch of water, just like skimming cream, this delicate salt has an almost sweet finish on the palate.

Hand collected everyday and sun-dried, this salt is handled in the same way that it was since before the Romans: without processing, machinery, chemicals or anti-caking agents. This is the cream of the sea: a salt that is pure white and filled with minerals that your body needs.

Still slightly moist from the ocean but fluffy in appearance, this salt is only used for ‘finishing’ a dish. This is called ‘front of the house’ salt, rather than back of the house…meaning that it is on the dining table, rather than a salt used at the stove in a kitchen. This salt is used as an enhancement to foods, rounding out and balancing flavors rather than just making them salty. If you have never used a ‘finishing’ salt, then you will be pleasantly surprised when you try this!

Flor de Sal is so delicate in grain as well as in flavor: a tiny salt explosion followed by a subtle sweet and mild finish that melts away. If you cook with this salt, its nuances will be lost. Make sure that you sprinkle it on food just before eating for maximum effect and pleasure.

We like the presentation of this lovely, light salt. In a plastic bag inside a burlap bag tied with raffia, there is the ‘Flor de Sal’ description superimposed over a photograph of a man harvesting this salt from the sea. If you love sea salt, you’ll be very impressed by this. It’s considered to be the finest sea salt in the world!
