Danish Viking Smoked Sea Salt

I love the thick, square glass jar that the owner puts his salts in. A deep cork lid fits easily into the wide mouth of the jar, allowing your fingers to reach in, or for the salt to pour effortlessly into your hand. Sprinkle, crush if you desire, or toss a generous amount into a large soup pot.

The contents of this lovely jar are Danish Viking Smoked Sea Salt. Pop the cork and take a smell: smoky, outdoor, fresh and enticing all at the same time. The color is like shiny copper: a sparkling combination of chunky salt crystals and the smoke of a real, open fire of juniper, cherry, elm, beech and oak. This unusual process of smoking salt was a real, millennium-old Viking recipe that was brought back to life by a Dane.

Small, smoky-tasting chunks melt in your mouth. This flavor is almost addictive and I find myself reaching for it and trying it on everything…even the tip of my finger! It takes almost anything and elevates it to another taste level. Not only is the salt enhancing, but the deep smoky flavor also complements so many more foods than I thought possible:

A wrap with herbed turkey and cheese becomes sublime
Scrambled eggs are incredible
You’ll love it on baked potato with any of your usual fixings
It takes tomato soup to new taste heights
Grilled or marinated meats have a new depth

The chef-owner gives suggestions on what foods to pair with this remarkable salt, plus supplying you with recipes that use this salt to perfection. Proceed with caution, as you may never be able to do without this unique, smoky sea salt again!
