Peruvian Pink Salt

Peruvian Pink Salt
Salt Traders

Pale pink slightly sparkly crystals that vary in size from grain to little chunks, this is one of the prettiest salts that I have ever seen. I have the 1.5-ounce sample size, but I can imagine the luscious color in the 4-ounce jar or the 5-pound bag!

The simple glass jar with the cork top is a wonderful contrast to the chunky texture of this Andean Salt. An underground ocean feeds a spring located 10,000 feet in the Mountains of Peru and collects in salt terraces in the Valley of the Incas. This pale pink salt has been harvested for over 2,000 years and is brought down from its high, remote and pure location by burros.

The salt is very crunchy. Don’t think that because you see little chunks of salt on your food that the result will be too salty: it is actually tempered and softened by its other quality of also having a wonderful mineral taste. This adds to and heightens the intensity of flavors in some foods.

I have used this salt on a new crop of fall apples and I personally love the unexpected crunch of the crystals and how it heightened the apple flavor! I know that it will do the same for the juicy sweet-tart of oranges.

This unusual salt brings out the very best in tomatoes. It’s not salty, like you would expect from the size of the crystal, it just enhances the tomato flavor. Cut a big, juicy tomato in half and splash some of these chunky crystals on top. Eat out of hand and see how the salt works by making the tomato taste even more so. Very satisfying. Would be an excellent addition to a long-simmered tomato sauce.

The sparkle in flavor contrasted with acidic sweet, sour and earthy food flavors, is distinct in this beautiful, rare salt! You won’t be disappointed if you’re a tomato fan or if you, like me, love salt on your apples and oranges!
