Irradiation Free Food!

As of August 22, 2008 the FDA has approved that spinach and lettuce sold in grocery stores will be irradiated. This is supposedly to kill any pathogens like e coli. These will be the first vegetables to receive irradiation, with other vegetables soon to follow. Unfortunately, rather than the FDA setting a standard for the growing and handling conditions of our nation’s produce (70% of our produce is ‘watered’ with RAW HUMAN SEWAGE!) our vegetables will be secretly irradiated, but not labelled as irradiated. In case you didn’t know, irradiation totally destroys irreplaceable cancer and disease-fighting nutrients!

We have a solution so that you and your family can keep getting the valuable nutrients that vegetables have to offer. Don’t just ‘buy organic’… learn to grow and preserve your own organic produce.

Sound formiddable? It’s not! More and more people are banding together and growing their own vegetable/victory gardens in community spaces, in pots, on terraces and in their own front and backyards. They are using natural fertilizers and pest control methods and reaping healthy and nutritious harvests.

A great place to start is to visit and contact www.spinfarming.com. Started in Canada and now growing in the U.S. this ‘ground-breaking’ group is showing us all how easy and fun it actually is to become self-sufficient in providing our own clean and natural produce. We can’t recommend them highly enough, and hope that many of you will contact them and start your own local SPIN group! Be sure and check out their valuable tips on how to grow nutrient dense, easy to grow sprouts.

For those of you whose thumb is nowhere near green we just discovered a‘just add water’ solution to growing your own produce! Go to www.veggiegrower.net and marvel at the brilliance of a garden in a box system! The inventor created this boxed garden to fight hunger in a town in Mexico and to say that it has been a hit and produced tons of fabulous fresh produce is putting it mildly! Even a roof on a school in New York city uses this system! If you don’t want to dig and plant, but you can lift a hose or a watering can and water…then this is the ‘irradiation-fighting’ way of getting healthy and fresh nutrients right in your own back (or front) yard!

Now, what can you do when you produce so much produce that you can’t eat it all? What a lovely thought…and there is an amaZing answer! Learn how to preserve your bounty the way that our forefathers did before freezers and tupperware. We have just finished reading ‘Preserving Food without Freezing or Canning’.

This is a wonderful book about ‘traditional techiniques using salt, oil, sugar, alcohol, vinegar, drying, cold storage and lactic fermentation’. Yes, this is simple to do, and the results are simply delicious! Imagine ‘preserving’ your excess bounty to enjoy in the cold of winter? No expensive price sticker just so you can eat peaches, strawberries, zucchini, tomatoes or herbs in the winter! Just open a jar and enjoy such delights as your own dried bananas without chemical additives, dehydrated mushrooms (without using a dehydrator!), marinated pearl onions, pickled garlic and even cheese preserved in herbs and oil. Yes, if you purchased these ‘delicacies’ they would be expensive, but with simple ingredients like oil, salt or vinegar, you can do it yourself, grow it yourself…and preserve it yourself at a fraction of the cost.

That’s smart, natural, nourishing…and PURE Zing!
